DISSENY PER A LA INCLUSIÓ

ICTUS Barcelona

Stroke is the name given to the consequences caused by the interruption of blood flow to the brain or the rupture of one of the cerebral veins or arteries. Despite rehabilitation, most stroke survivors do not fully regain mobility. We propose to generate debate on inclusive fashion by designing a clothing collection for these people who have been forced to relearn and readapt in their day-to-day life in such a daily action as getting dressed. The Associació per a Superar l’Ictus Barcelona works to improve the quality of life of people who have suffered from the disease through collective and family advice.

“Design should adapt to people,
not people to design”

– Glòria Bou, stroke survivor

The fashion design students at the LCI Barcelona design school co-create with this group in order to promote their autonomy and independence when it comes to dressing. The project is supervised by Sonia Carrasco, designer with her own sustainable fashion brand and teacher at LCI of the optional subject Eco-Design Strategies; and Bárbara Garballo, a designer specializing in corsetry and haute couture, and a teacher at LCI of Patternmaking, Cut and Assembly and the corsetry subject.

The set of pieces developed during this time is the result of sharing experiences, memories and needs in dialogue between designers and users. These pieces demanded to be useful, but also aesthetic, a fact that has encouraged them to be part of the process, breaking down the difference between utility and aesthetics. The students have been faced with the challenge of making pieces by hand, not only with different sizes, but also with asymmetry. The complementation of opinions has been the strong point of the project, since the experiential knowledge of each other has put the spotlight on unknown details in the gaze of others. The final result has been presented through a photo shoot starring stroke survivors, also emphasizing non-normative bodies that are so ignored in the world of conventional fashion.

The total number of pieces presented are nine; divided into two collections of different styles. The aesthetics of one of the collections implied the active participation of all the components, painting with footsteps, brushes and fingers on fabrics that would later be patronized to make the final pieces. In the other collection, what stands out the most is the union of fabrics and prints that signify beauty in difference.

There are two visions: you can make pants and then adapt them, or directly make pants that adapt”
